Velvi
is a registered trust founded by Dr.Parasuram Ramamoorthi
in 1998 at Madurai, the home of ancient arts and culture.
Velvi means ‘an interior journey, an act of purification
for the welfare of humanity’.
Velvi offers training programmes in Arts, Theatre, Music,
and Dance. We run theatre festivals, arts management workshops
and workshops on personality development through the arts.
Some of the key areas we operate in are:
• Training in self-development through arts
• Actor training workshops (3rd Eye Opens)
• Theatre productions
• Overseas students training programme in Indian arts
• Cultural tours of South India (architectural marvels,
theatre expeditions, yoga training etc.)
• Drama therapy training and training for corporate
bodies for self development & developing business through
arts. We design tailor made programmes according to the needs
of organizations and individuals.
• Publication programme called Velvi Books, which publishes
quality plays and research work reviewed by peers.
Hi-Tech Arai Ltd and TVS Tyres are two of the industrial houses
that were benefited by Velvi's training programmes. The workshop
‘Discover the Manager in You’ created positive
results in both organizations as testified by its CEOs. A
group of individuals who attended the self-development workshops
feel that their life has changed tremendously since attending
the workshop.
Velvi offers training programme in Drama therapy. Drama and
arts with the specific intention of healing psychic wounds
is being practiced at Velvi. Currently Velvi is running a
drama therapy workshop at a rehabilitation home run by MS
Chellamuthu trust. In the year 2002 Velvi organized a Drama
therapy programme at Madurai prison where 10 lifers benefited
by the therapy sessions.
Velvi in association with Saatvikam organizes cultural tours,
training programmes for overseas students in Indian Arts and
culture. Three students from the University of East Anglia,
Norwich, UK were helped with placements in Madurai and they
also were introduced to the basics of Indian theatre, Yoga
and dance. Middlesex University, UK had arranged for a summer
course for 3 of its students to spend 10 weeks at Madurai
where they were taught Yoga, Dance, Indian theatre texts and
also Indian theatre forms.
Velvi organized two theatre festivals in Madurai and participated
in many theatre festivals in India. Velvi's theatre festival
attracted plays from Kerala, Karnataka and New Delhi where
doyens of Indian theatre Kavalam Narayan Panikker and Ms Jayashree
participated and presented their works.
Velvi is managed by a board of trustees headed
by Dr.Parasuram Ramamoorthi, Playwright/Poet/Director and
Drama Therapist. Dancers and teachers interested in arts and
arts education are part of the trustees who strive to create
awareness among the youth about Indian Culture and the Arts.
Life has to be artistic and the Arts have
to be life-oriented. This is the philosophy of Velvi.
